Engraving Practice Pattern Generator

Most musicians practise against sheet music. Engravers rarely have any. Divide a practice plate into sections, fill each with a different exercise, and print it at exact 1:1 size to transfer onto metal.

Print at 100% scale, then measure the 1 inch bar before you transfer.

Laser-print the sheet, lay it face down on a clean degreased plate, wet the back with acetone, burnish, and peel. PDF is the most reliable way to print at exact size; SVG is for editing in Affinity or Inkscape first.

Tips

  • Isolate one skill per plate. A plate of nothing but parallel lines teaches more than a plate of everything.
  • Rotate the plate, not the graver. Set up a comfortable cutting direction and bring the work to it.
  • Degrease the plate before transferring. Acetone on a fingerprint lifts the toner unevenly.
  • 20 ga (0.8 mm) or thicker gives you enough stock depth to practise on without cutting through.
  • Measure the printed scale bar every time. A printer driver update can silently reintroduce scaling.

How it works

Start with a plate and divide it the way you would by hand: halve it, halve one half, split a section on its diagonal. Each undivided section gets a pattern: parallel hatching, radiating rays, concentric arcs, a fish-scale grid of crescent cuts, or a spiral with leaf lines. One plate can then isolate five different graver skills at once.

The one real constraint is the transfer, not the metal. Laser toner lines set too close together merge into a single mass when you wet the back with acetone, and how close is too close depends on your printer, your toner and your paper, so leave enough space between the lines. The generator holds a minimum spacing and tells you when it has adjusted something, but treat that as a starting point to test against rather than a guarantee: if a transfer comes out muddy, open the spacing up and run it again. Engraving itself has no minimum distance between cuts, and adjacent and converging cuts are ordinary work. That is why the blank hub on a fan of rays is only a suggestion you can override.

Everything is drawn at 1 unit per millimeter and printed at physical size, with a one inch bar on the sheet so you can confirm your printer did not rescale it. Measure that bar before you transfer anything.
