Tips

  • Precious metal prices change daily — check the current spot price before estimating costs.
  • Troy ounces (used for precious metals) are heavier than regular ounces: 1 troy oz = 31.1g vs 1 oz = 28.3g.
  • When buying wire by weight, remember that thinner gauges cost more per gram due to drawing costs.
  • Sterling silver is about 7.5% copper — it's slightly lighter than fine silver.

How It Works

Weight is volume × density. The calculator computes volume from the shape's dimensions (wire, sheet/strip, or tube), then multiplies by the metal's density. Different alloys of the same metal have different densities — for example, 24K gold (19.32 g/cm³) is noticeably denser than 14K (13.07 g/cm³) because the alloying metals (copper, silver) are lighter.
